Utilizing the power of place as a tool for learning, this trip will take us from the beaches of Normandy to the streets of Paris, Munich, and Berlin in search of understanding the role of Nazism in WWII and the Holocaust. On the north shore of France, students will touch the sands of Omaha Beach, the bloodiest beach of the D-Day Invasion, as they hear about those who gave their “last full measure of devotion”to ensure that Europe would be free. In Munich, students will walk “Shirkers’ Lane,” a street that some Munich citizens took to avoid saluting a Nazi memorial and in so doing, express a small bit of resistance to the Nazi regime. In Dachau, students will consider the horrific outcome of the Nazis’ Final Solution at a concentration camp. Along the way, they will have the opportunity to eat in, stay in, and appreciate some of Europe’s most famous cities!
Despite its small size, Costa Rica is one of the most geographically and ecologically diverse countries in the world, boasting 4.5% of the world’s biodiversity. On this trip, we will be observing and interacting with many of these species, but predominantly with the largest extant sea turtle, the leatherback. These behemoths weigh approximately 1000 lbs, and only come ashore to nest on a few beaches around the world. With our partners at Ecology Projects International, we will be spending four days on a leatherback nesting beach on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Students will be collecting data on nesting sea turtles during a nightly census, and using these data to complete a mini-research project. For the second part of the trip we will be heading to a rainforest to walk beneath the lush canopies, and learn about the immense biodiversity of tropical flora and fauna. Pura Vida!
Grades: 9 - 10 Mid July - Late August 2019 Cost: Airfare, miscellaneous expenses and spending money
The Derryfield School has developed partnerships with the Durban Girls' College, a girls' high school in South Africa, and Wynberg Boys' School in Cape Town, South Africa. Two of our ninth/tenth grade boys and girls will have the opportunity to attend these schools and live with a host family for six weeks next summer. In exchange, the Derryfield students participating in this program will host a student from the South African schools for six weeks during the Winter 2019 term in New Hampshire.
