At Derryfield, we prioritize well-being and social emotional learning throughout our curriculum and school schedule, multiple supports for wellness. We a have a team approach through peer support; an advisory system; Leadership, Ethics and Development (LEAD) curriculum; counseling department and parent partnership to ensure that all students are cared for and known members of our community.
Advising
One of the hallmarks of successful independent schools is a strong advising system. Derryfield’s advisory program is no exception! All students in grades 6-12 are assigned an advisor each year who will serve as an advocate, supporter and personal faculty liaison to a group of six to nine students. Advisory groups meet regularly throughout the week, allowing for check-ins on students’ academic, social and extracurricular progress.
Counseling
The combination of adolescence and attendance in a rigorous academic school setting can be challenging to students intellectually and emotionally. In an effort to support students through this phase of their growth and development, we offer students access to a qualified guidance counselor who can provide assistance and support to students on a variety of issues including, but not limited to, time management, sleep issues, stress, anxiety, relationships with peers and parents, and more.
Academic Support
Upper school faculty have worked hard to embed coordinated skills instruction through the upper school curriculum. In addition, Director of Academic Support Jenny Boesch maintains close communication with classroom teachers and advisors to identify students needing academic support and to provide those resources. Students and parents are encouraged to contact Jenny at jboesch@derryfield.org for consultation on the services that match their needs.
This course is designed for our students newest to Derryfield and aims to sharpen the basic organizational and study skills necessary for success in the Middle School curriculum. Students learn and practice techniques based on the latest brain science that require them to take an active role in their learning. Topics include understanding individual learning styles and memory, organizing materials, planning and using time efficiently, note taking, listening, active reading, test taking, public speaking and self-advocacy. Writing process and self-editing skills are also addressed. The student planner, course texts, and class projects serve as important materials for applying various learning strategies and developing sound study habits.
Those students who find that they need more support may wish to enroll in Academic Power with Jodie Leen. These one-on-one sessions are 30 minutes and focus on a student’s individual challenges in organization and time management as well as developing subject specific strategies for success. A student who wishes for more content-driven instruction may work with one of the school’s tutors. Both Academic Power and tutoring are fee-based, and can be arranged by contacting our Director of Academic Support Jenny Boesch.
This course is designed for ninth grade students, or those new to Derryfield, who wish to sharpen the basic reading, writing, and study skills necessary for success in the upper school curriculum. Students learn and practice techniques based on the latest brain science that require them to take an active role in their learning. Topics include understanding individual learning styles and memory, organizing materials, planning and using time efficiently, note taking, listening, active reading, test taking, and self-advocacy. Writing process and self-editing skills are also addressed. The student planner, course texts, and class notebooks serve as important materials for applying various learning strategies and developing sound study habits.
This course is designed for the student who has completed Academic Foundation, has been introduced to a variety of study techniques, and is seeking a program tailored to meet his or her individual learning needs. Each student works with the instructor to develop a plan and practice the specific skills and strategies needed to achieve personal goals. The objective of the course is for the student to gain an understanding of how he or she learns, to adapt study strategies to support learning, and to develop sound study habits. Course fee is $1,100.00.
Students who have taken a previous academic support class or who are seeking to fine tune previously developed skills may wish to continue to have support in a more independent way. This course is a transitional step from the structure of Academic Foundation or Support to the informed and effective self-advocacy needed to excel at learning in subsequent years of education. Course fee is $550.00.

Mary Perkins has been the School Counselor at Derryfield since 2001. Mary’s counseling approach aims to help adolescents gain the important skills of self-reflecting, healthy decision-making, empathy towards self and others, and awareness of how their thoughts/moods/beliefs influence their perceptions, behaviors, and relationships.
“The number one goal is to provide a safe space for kids to talk about the day-to-day challenges of being a teenager and all of the things going on in their life that aren’t a part of their academic curriculum, but yet are so important. These things might include friendships and other relationships, stress, decision-making, changing social dynamics, and emotional regulation. I strive to give kids a common language to understand and talk about what they’re experiencing, and also to normalize all the ups and downs of adolescence. I believe that as our kids develop resilience, confidence, and emotional intelligence, they will find more success in the classroom and in their extracurricular lives.”
Jenny Boesch became the Director of Academic Support in 2013 after gaining a wealth of teaching experience in private and public schools. She began her teaching career 31 years ago after graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College with a BS in Government. Jenny spent many years as a history teacher as well as coaching soccer, ice hockey and track, running a dormitory and supervising both political and women’s issues clubs. She even started and coached the girls ice hockey program at Concord High School. Jenny is a ninth grade head class advisor as well as the faculty advisor to One Love, a Derryfield club dedicated to increasing awareness around relationship violence. Her passion is to help all students become the best learners they can be. She also loves to hike with Whinny, her golden retriever, kayak, garden, read, travel, and spend time with her husband and three children. She still occasionally picks up her stick and straps on her hockey skates for a good game of pond hockey.

[post_content] => Brianna Rourke joined Derryfield in 2022. Prior to DS, she worked in the clinical world where she spent a few years as the lead pediatric nurse at Core Physicians in Exeter, NH. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She is presently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing from Regis College to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. Brianna’s passion lies in caring for the pediatric population. Working at Derryfield allows her to care for this population while building relationships and watching our students grow and evolve as individuals. Brianna also co-teaches 7th grade LEAD and offers a CPR/babysitting exploration class in the winter and spring terms.
