Student Wellness & Support

A School Where Every Student is Known

At Derryfield, we prioritize well-being and social emotional learning throughout our curriculum and school schedule, multiple supports for wellness. We a have a team approach through peer support; an advisory system; Leadership, Ethics and Development (LEAD) curriculum; counseling department and parent partnership to ensure that all students are cared for and known members of our community.

Advising

One of the hallmarks of successful independent schools is a strong advising system. Derryfield’s advisory program is no exception! All students in grades 6-12 are assigned an advisor each year who will serve as an advocate, supporter and personal faculty liaison to a group of six to nine students. Advisory groups meet regularly throughout the week, allowing for check-ins on students’ academic, social and extracurricular progress.

Counseling

The combination of adolescence and attendance in a rigorous academic school setting can be challenging to students intellectually and emotionally. In an effort to support students through this phase of their growth and development, we offer students access to a qualified guidance counselor who can provide assistance and support to students on a variety of issues including, but not limited to, time management, sleep issues, stress, anxiety, relationships with peers and parents, and more.

Academic Support

Upper school faculty have worked hard to embed coordinated skills instruction through the upper school curriculum. In addition, Director of Academic Support Jenny Boesch maintains close communication with classroom teachers and advisors to identify students needing academic support and to provide those resources. Students and parents are encouraged to contact Jenny at jboesch@derryfield.org for consultation on the services that match their needs.
