Varsity Coed Crew – Spring
In the spring Derryfield’s crew team hosts and travels to head-to-head 1500-meter races against other local secondary schools. The team can be found competing at the highest levels, from USRowing’s NorthEast Regionals to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta—even the National Championship USRowing Youth Invitational Regatta. During the summer Derryfield’s rowers love of the sport carries them across the country for rowing camps and even garners invitations to join the United States Junior National Team. Upon graduation, many team members go on to row and cox in college and after.

Coach Wilson
Kim Wilson, Head Coach

Coach Kim Wilson joined Derryfield as the head coach of the crew team in 2024. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in economics and later completed a doctorate in Health Promotion and Behavioral Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center’s School of Public Health. She was a member of her college swim team and then cycled through several sports (including triathlons, marathons and bike racing) before finding rowing in 2012. Since that time, she has successfully competed at the national and international level as a masters rower including 2nd place finishes in 2021 and 2022 in the 2x at the Head of the Charles. She is enjoying sharing her love for and knowledge of the sport with Derryfield’s crew team members and endeavors to instill some fun into all workouts (even the really hard ones).
Coach Varga-Wells
Katy Varga-Wells, Assistant Coach

Kaitlin Varga-Wells will be joining the Derryfield crew coaching staff this fall. A Williston Northampton alumna, she earned her BA in English and Secondary Education from Connecticut College, where she captained the varsity rowing team. In her fourteen years of working at independent schools, Kaitlin has taught and coached at the Frederick Gunn School and Kent School, and most recently served as the Head of the Crew Program at Brewster Academy. Having worked with rowers and coxswains who continued their collegiate careers at schools such as Brown, Stanford, Trinity, Northeastern, Cornell, Columbia, and UVA, Coach VW has also coached athletes who have medaled at the New England Interscholastic Championship, competed at Henley Regatta in England, and pursued national team opportunities. Throughout the summer, Katy is a program director for SPARKS rowing camps and coaches at Wolfeboro Sculling School. She continues to race in premier events like the Head of the Charles and RowFest with her high-performance adult team. At Derryfield, Katy looks forward to sharing her passion for coaching a sport that has brought her tremendous joy!
Coach Bowden
Antonia Bowden, Assistant Coach

Antonia Bowden will begin coaching at Derryfield this spring (2026), after coaching Varsity High School and Master’s Rowing at Texas Rowing Center in Austin, Texas. A graduate of Trinity College, she captained the Trinity College Women’s Rowing team for two years, and won an NCAA Championship in the Varsity 8+ in 2015. She began rowing at Kent School, where she also played varsity soccer and ice hockey. She has coached rowing at Trinity College, St. Paul’s School, and most recently, Texas Rowing Center.
