Boys’ Basketball – Varsity
The Derryfield Boys’ Varsity Basketball program was established and guided by NHIAA Hall of Fame coach Dennis Holland, who led the team for 31 years and won a state title in 1983. Since then, the program has had success with consistent appearances in the state tournaments. Numerous players have received All-State recognition from the New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Association and the program is proud to have a strong presence each season on the All-Academic team. Since 2010, they have been in the Final Four eight times and have been runners-up twice. The program constantly strives to challenge its opponents and be competitive while maintaining a core of fair play and sportsmanship.

Coach Roy is a graduate of Canaan Memorial High School in Canaan, VT where he played on the Pittsburg-Canaan Boys Basketball team in the NHIAA. He continued his education at Endicott College, where he worked as a Student Assistant for the Men’s Basketball program that competes in NCAA Division III. During his time at Endicott, the team played in one NCAA tournament, reaching the Sweet 16 and played in three conference championship games. Coach Roy continued his education at Vermont State University, earning his Master’s in Leadership Studies, and he is continuing to take classes through Southern New Hampshire University within their Higher Education Administration program.
Following his graduation from Endicott, Coach Roy moved to northern New Hampshire and accepted the Boys Basketball Head Coach position at Profile School. During his four years at Profile, the Patriots improved each season. During his Profile tenure, Coach Roy won Division IV Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2024 and the Patriots won the 2024 Division IV State Championship, capping off an undefeated season at 27-0 with a win over rival Littleton. Highlights of that historic season included season sweeps over perennial powerhouses Woodsville and Littleton, as well winning “The Bash” Holiday Tournament with wins over Division II Sanborn and Coe-Brown and an upset over Division I Windham.
After moving to southern New Hampshire during the summer of 2024, Coach Roy was named the Head Coach at Division I Alvirne High School. Though his time with the Broncos was brief, Coach Roy navigated them in his lone season to a 7-seed and got the opportunity to host a home playoff game. That season was highlighted by a 10 game win streak and notable wins over Falmouth (ME), Trinity, Pinkerton and eventual champion Bedford.
Coach Roy comes to Derryfield with a 73-32 head coaching record and has helped develop three student-athletes to playing at the collegiate level, five of his former players have received all-state honors and one has earned all-defensive team honors. Coach Roy’s approach to coaching values relationship building and places an emphasis on building up team chemistry. He plans to bring a top-down leadership approach and have heavy involvement in our Middle School and JV teams to help develop student-athletes to be prepared for the varsity level in the future. Coach Roy is the Auxiliary Program Manager here at Derryfield.
