Field Hockey

Varsity

Derryfield returned to varsity field hockey in the fall of 1998, after a period of club status playing JV teams only. The team posted a 2-11 record in Class M/S that season and had a winning (9-6) record in 2000. Since 2004, Derryfield has made several Final Four appearances, were finalists in 2005 and 2006, and won the school’s first-ever State Title in 2007 with a 17-0 record. After semifinal losses in 2008 and 2009, the team won its way back into the final in 2010, 2011, and 2012 seasons, capturing a historic three-peat DIII State Championship run for the first time in school history and earning Derryfield four titles in six years. In the 2013 season, Derryfield returned to the final for a fourth consecutive year but had to settle for the runner-up trophy. Since the program’s return to varsity status in 1998 Derryfield has won over 275 games. In our endeavors to continually challenge our student-athletes, Derryfield field hockey moved up to Division II in 2014. In 2016, the team finished runners-up, losing in double overtime in the final, but captured their first-ever DII championship in the fall of 2018 with a 1-0 win over Hanover HS. The team won the Tri-County League championships in 2014 and 2015. Following Coach McCaigue’s retirement after the 2019 season, assistant varsity coach Kelsey Federico assumes the Head Coach position. Coach Federico is an alumna of UMass Lowell where she was a standout Goalkeeper in the NCAA Division 1 program and also brings a wealth of coaching experience in club field hockey with the NorthEast Elite travel team.

JV

The JV Girls’ Field Hockey Team is the developmental component of the field hockey program at Derryfield, providing the opportunity for new and inexperienced players to learn the fundamental skills and strategies of the game at an appropriate pace. While the JV team works independently and has its own game schedule, (usually back to back with the varsity games), so that players get ample time on the field and game experience, they also join the varsity practices regularly for drills and scrimmages to encourage competition and increase confidence. The entire program is built on teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment, perseverance, and leadership with everyone held to the same expectations. Our intention is for all players to make progress as individuals and contribute to the team’s improvement over the season, while at the same time developing a “love for the game”.
