Kicking off the year with class retreats

Elaine Loft, Staff Writer

Each year Derryfield students make the transition from summer to school via full-day retreats designed to encourage them to get to know one another, to set class goals, and to discover more about the school.

This year the weather was flawless, allowing for both outdoor and indoor activities. Lawn games, scavenger hunts, and a stint on the climbing wall were favorite activities. Everyone gathered in The Matarese Dining Commons for lunch, and the 10th graders were treated to “nitrogen ice cream” from Sub-Zero.

Grade eleven traveled to Derryfield Park for a photo scavenger hunt. The top award in the competition was given to the team whose photos covered the widest geographic range of the park. Other categories included a “jumping photo” (all feet off the ground), and “Where’s Waldo,” where everyone had to be “visible but hidden.”

The senior class retreat always has a surprise theme. This year it was “Senior Survivor.” The teams were first tasked with creating a name and motto for their flag. They then competed in relay games, a “how well do you know your classmates” matching game, and soaking water relays on the lawn in front of Commons. The competition was both fierce and fun.

Although nearly every ninth grader responded to the question, “What are you most looking forward to this school year?” with an emphatic, “Making new friends!” a variety of replies emerged from other students.

“I am looking forward to getting to know my classmates, and trying new things.” Eleni Babis ‘31

“I am looking forward to all the art classes.” Lulu Budd ‘29

“I am looking forward to being able to drive.” Evelyn Singer ‘28

“I am approaching this new year with a fresh start, and look forward to the opportunity to become a new version of myself.” Taylor Bradley ‘27

The first full day of school for all Derryfield students is Thursday, August 28.
