Mock Trial Prepped for States

Mary Karlin
On Saturday, December 8, the DS Mock Trial Club went up against three veteran high school teams in court before three different judges in an Invitational Tournament hosted by Phillips Exeter Academy.

Round 1 saw defense attorneys Yash Patel, Aaron Agulnick and Sydney Chodosh go up against a disciplined and seasoned Phillips Exeter squad, with strong support from their defense witnesses Holly Rohlfs, Cam Quinlan, and Mady Thorne. The team delivered their case with conviction and poise - each member rigorously prepared for examination and cross - earning a favorable critique from the sitting judge at the conclusion of the trial.

After a fortifying lunch downtown, plaintiff attorneys Eric Chapdelaine, Gavin Kurdek and Yash Patel faced a varsity Souhegan High team before a Manchester criminal attorney who sat as judge in Round 2. Their case was fortified by expert witnesses Zoe Cousineau, Sami King and Nat Pagliocco. This was their first trial experience, and they determinedly nipped away at the defendants’ case, paring away the opposition’s case theory and laying out their own case of negligence surrounding an athlete’s concussion. The criminal attorney acting as the bench judge praised their preparation.

Round 3 saw the defense team at it again before a UNH law student as judge, and a critically sharp PEA squad of plaintiff attorneys and witnesses. The DS defense held their case together tightly in the face of some highly unorthodox Exeter tactics, including one witness who (by design) could remember nothing in the witness chair to offer the defendants.

Frustrated, exhilarated and empowered with the learning and small triumphs of an exhausting day, the Club climbed back aboard the bus to debrief and swap their war stories of the good, the bad and the ugly. This Invitational has seasoned them for the upcoming capstone States competition at Hillsborough County Courthouse in Nashua on the weekend of February 10, 2019.

Please come and support the DS Mock Trial attorneys and witnesses as they face opposition teams across the state of New Hampshire.
