Head Coach: Peter Breu
Derryfield's Varsity Nordic team seeks to inspire a love of cross-country skiing through instruction and practice in both classic track and freestyle skate disciplines. The best nordic racers in the state race side by side with beginners. Our season begins with daily dry land exercises and a careful series of imitation ski techniques that include roller ski practice. We move to snow as soon as the weather permits, practicing at on our own ski trails when conditions allow, skiing right out the back door of school on excellent trails. Our races are held on some of the best of nordic trails in New England, and we schedule local races when the snow quality permits. We are a cohesive and supportive team that enjoys being together and outdoors in the winter.
Peter Breu started working with Derryfield nordic skiing in 2009. Peter raced NENSA (New England Nordic Ski Association) for eight years and competed in Swedish Vasaloppet, a 90km classic race with 13,500 skiers. He was the Crystal Springs Uplands School boys' varsity soccer coach from 1987-1990 and coached Derryfield girls' JV soccer from 1993-1996. Peter also served as Manchester Central nordic ski coach from 2004-2009, winning the boys' Division 1 state championship in 2005. He was also the NH Easterns Nordic Ski team captain in 2008 and 2009. The Derryfield nordic team welcomes skiers of all talent levels. Peter remarked, "I've always focused on letting everyone try skiing. It is fun working with experienced skiers, but teaching beginners is a huge pleasure.”
