Alpine Skiing - MS

2022 - 2023

The Middle School Alpine Ski Team is open to seventh and eighth graders who want to learn to race or to improve their racing skills. Skiers do not have to have racing experience, but they should be able to safely ski intermediate to advanced trails. The season begins with dry land training, focusing on developing stamina and strengthening the muscles used in skiing. In January, we begin training once or twice a week at Pat’s Peak where skiers practice running slalom and giant slalom courses and work on improving their form and speed. During the season students attend three daylong races, competing against other middle school students.

Bio
Sports have always been a part of his life. Growing up in New Jersey he played soccer and baseball in town leagues and a plethora of other sports at summer camps. His family made frequent ski trips to ski Killington in Vermont. He moved to Arizona where he played keeper on a traveling soccer team. Throughout his teenage years, he stayed active in sports, even finding places out west to go skiing. Attending the University of Vermont, skiing became a part of his winter schedule, but he picked up a new sport in ultimate disc (Frisbee). When he became a teacher he was asked to coach soccer and baseball at his first school. At another school, he added alpine skiing and ultimate to his coaching resume.

Coach Donovan's coaching philosophy is to enable each athlete’s development to his or her full potential by offering an appropriate blend of guided free-skiing, skill enhancement, technical improvement, and race course tactics, in an atmosphere of fun and encouragement. His goal is to create outstanding citizens and expert versatile skiers first, recognizing that with further coaching, many will become outstanding racers.

Bio
Coach Goldberg is a lifelong skier, but got her first experience in gates as a snowboard racer for the University of Vermont during her college years. She rarely snowboards now, but jumped into the world of ski racing years ago when her sons Kyle and Logan starting racing for the Gunstock Ski Club and also raced for Derryfield. Kathy was previously a ski instructor at McIntyre and is a certified USSA Level 100 Alpine Coach. Kathy enjoys working with athletes of varying abilities on the snow, from recreational skiers to seasoned racers. She strives to find competitive results for the team and inspire a lifelong love of skiing in every student.

Bio
Chris Hettler does it all. He is the head coach of varsity boys’ and girls’ alpine skiing, and varsity boys' lacrosse. Although lacrosse is Hettler's passion, he has also shown a love for cross-country running and alpine skiing. In 2010, the Derryfield's boys' alpine ski team won the Division IV state championship and in 2009 boys and girls were runners-up. Coach Hettler is fully invested in helping kids improve their skills while developing a love for the sport.

Great final race!

What a beautiful day on the mountain yesterday....it was spring skiing in February. The course was long and turny and the racers were tired after their run. Average runs were around 45 seconds compared to previous races around 30. In the racing world, 15 seconds is a lifetime. I have a link to the photos I took while on the course.

Before the results, thank you for a great season! I especially want to thank our 3 eighth graders Grace B., Eli O., and Asher W. We will miss you next year! To the remaining six racers, I hope to see you on the slopes next year and try and recruit more ski team members.

Now to the results:
Because we didn't have a full team for the race and a small team we were down in the results. We ended up in 11th out of 13 teams. Tymon J. was our fastest racer and 46 out of 100+ racers with a time of 44.74, Charlie D. was only 0.26 behind him. You can see the full results in the links.

Last regular season GS/SL Race

Great race to end the regular season! So many of our racers have come a very long way in such a short amount of time. Full highlights and (very far away) photos can be found in the link to the results, but some key highlights include: Boys SL- Asher W. was 21st overall out of 58 racers. Girls SL- Charlotte B. was 10th overall out of 52 racers!!! Boys GS- Tymon J. was 20th out of 58 racers. Girls GS- Charlotte B. was 15th out of 52 racers. Congrats to all of our racers! Next and last race at Attitash for the Red Parka Jr. State race
