Shannon Best discovered the joy of running on her high school cross country team, and has enjoyed it for recreation, health and competition ever since. As a fitness instructor at the Greater Manchester YMCA for 6 years, Shannon loves "...helping people discover how fun it can be to achieve health and fitness goals."
Coaching philosophy: "I love working with youth! They keep me young and I'm so thrilled to be a part of the Derryfield Cross Country team. Long distance running is a mentally and physically demanding sport but really anyone can do it if they are willing to put in time and effort. Promoting a team spirit is key to helping them build confidence and making it fun! I love working along side the team every day, encouraging them as they train for their individual goals and watching them achieve their personal best. They inspire me every day!"
Despite several hiccups in the meet schedule and sub-50 degree temperatures that only grew colder as the evening progressed, the Derryfield Varsity Track team showed impressive grit at Campbell on April 30. In a field of 11 boys teams and 10 girls teams, the athletes fought hard and continued to improve their performances in both the running and field events.
Congratulations to Derryfield senior Matt Michaud, who won a NHADA scholarship for his essay on what high school sports has meant to him. A member of the cross country and track teams, he talks about how running is a metaphor for life....
