Derryfield’s three new a cappella performance groups, acaFellas, Encore, and Polyphony, were busy over break, getting a chance to sing their stuff in Symphony New Hampshire’s concert “Spring Sing with the ‘Bubs,” held right here at Derryfield.
The concert was headlined by the Tufts University Beelzebubs (the ‘Bubs), who are familiar to audiences nationwide from their appearances on the television show “The Sing-off” and as the voices of the Dalton Warblers on “Glee.” Also appearing were Boston’s professional a cappella group Redline, New Hampshire’s all-women Profile Chorus, and Manchester West High School’s Blue Knights, this year’s winners of the “Voices of the 603” a cappella contest.
The ‘Bubs, as they’re familiarly known, were generous with their time, giving a pre-show workshop to the Derryfield and Manchester West singers. Director of Choral Music Kristen Acker was very pleased with the experience. “This was an amazing experience for the students to work closely with such an accomplished college group. They coached each of our groups, sang with them, talked to them about different aspects of the style, gave our kids specific feedback, got them encouraged and psyched about what they are doing. Our kids got A LOT out of it.”
Organized by Milling Around, UNH Manchester’s co-ed a cappella group, “Voices of the 603” is an annual a cappella competition that invites middle and high school groups from all over New Hampshire to compete for titles like “Best Mash Up,” “Best Audience Reaction,” and “Best Team Spirit,” as well, of course, for the overall winner. Ms. Acker says that she is looking forward to having Derryfield’s groups compete next year.
Located in Manchester, NH, The Derryfield School is a private day school for grades 6-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
