English, Art, and Core Values
In conjunction with the sixth grade English classes reading of Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, art teacher Ms. Karp helped make connections to the time period of the book by introducing students to art of the Harlem Renaissance. Artists like Romare Bearden, Aaron Douglas, and Jacob Lawrence created collages and murals inspired by the African-American experience and their sense of community. To help students reflect more deeply on these subject areas, Ms. Karp asked her students to consider the Derryfield core values. The students were asked to select one of the core values and write a paragraph about why they chose that value. They were then asked to construct a mixed-media collage about the value they chose. All of these students' collages will be combined to create a mural that will be installed in the middle school wave, expressing student vision and understanding of the DS core values.
Located in Manchester, NH, The Derryfield School is a private day school for grades 6-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
