James Porter has spent his life engaged in a love affair with running. He started competing in local 5k's as a middle schooler and continued his running career as a track captain in high school, earning All State honors in the 400/800 & Pole Vault. He was a member of the University of Delaware track team in college, which won two conference championships.
As an adult, James kept exploring his passion through education and competitive running. In the classroom he has achieved the distinction as a USATF Level 1 Certified Running Coach & gained his AFAA Certified Personal Trainer License. He has studied all the legendary coaches and their theories, but counts Dr. Jack Daniels as his greatest coaching influence.
Competitively, he races for the Athletic Alliance Running Club in Manchester in events ranging from the 400m to the marathon. He has recently competed in USATF Indoor Master Track & Field Championship, the 2013 National Championship of Mountain Running, and is a three-time USATF Mountain Goat.
James currently coaches track and field at Manchester West HS, as well as several local runners. His main goal is to help every runner achieve their goals and feel happy and healthy. "Running is such an amazing sport, one that gives you a lifetime of rewards. Every runner, no matter what ability level or experience, can achieve improvement and success. All it takes is dedication and hard work. Traits that carry over to success in other avenues of life."
James is excited to share his passion and knowledge of running with the team in an effort to make them happy, healthy and successful in all walks of life.
The Derryfield Athletic Department is excited to have James become our new Head Coach for our Cross Country program and continue the tradition of producing excellent runners at the school.
