Annual Fund

A Ripple Effect
The Annual Fund solicits unrestricted donations from everyone connected to The Derryfield School community, past and present, in order to provide students and faculty with the resources they need to thrive each year. It is a yearly community giving effort from July 1 to June 30.

Because tuition does not cover all the costs associated with developing a challenging curriculum, the School relies on the generosity of Trustees, current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends to balance the remainder of the budget each year. The Annual Fund supports every aspect of The Derryfield School experience, including faculty salaries, financial aid, student programs, athletics, arts, classroom instruction, and even running water and electricity on campus.
The Annual Fund is Derryfield’s primary philanthropic initiative and immediately supports the School’s needs. It is important for donors to give as generously as possible year after year so that The Derryfield School can continue to provide the best possible experience for students and faculty. For more information about the Annual Fund, please contact Mollie Mattuchio MacDearmid, Derryfield’s Director of Annual Giving, at 603.669.4524, ext. 6102 or
The mission of the Annual Fund is to solicit and gather voluntary, tax-deductible gifts that will bridge the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating each Derryfield student. For this purpose, the Annual Fund operates on a year-round basis, educating the Derryfield community about the needs of the School and organizing opportunities for giving. Derryfield, like other independent schools, relies on fund raising to balance its budget.

Annual Fund FAQ

List of 9 frequently asked questions.

  • Why does Derryfield need an Annual Fund?

Contributions to the Annual Fund are vital because they support the daily life of the School, funding 6.2% of the School’s operating budget, or $650,000, and it covers everything from financial aid to academics, athletics, arts, and faculty salaries.
  • Doesn't tuition cover the cost of a student's education?

Like other independent schools, tuition does not cover the total annual cost of a student's Derryfield experience. Derryfield's Annual Fund supports a diverse community of learners, excellent facilities, the best possible faculty and staff, and more.
  • Who is asked to participate in the Annual Fund?

Members of the Board of Trustees, faculty/staff, current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, corporations, foundations, and friends are all asked to support the Annual Fund. Each year, the School receives 100% participation from the Board of Trustees and faculty/staff, and we hope to achieve 100% participation across all groups this year.
  • Is it possible to defer gifts until the following calendar year?

Yes. While we ask for all pledge commitments to be made by December 31, 2016 for budgeting purposes, gifts can be paid any time prior to June 30, 2017.
  • How much should I give?

You should give whatever you feel comfortable giving and/or can afford. Gifts to the Annual Fund range from $1 to $35,000, and every gift that is made is greatly appreciated and makes a significant impact toward the success of the School. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and every gift makes a difference!
  • What do you mean, "tax-deductible"?

Gifts to non-profit educational institutions like The Derryfield School qualify as charitable contributions and can be deducted if you itemize your taxes.
  • Do volunteer hours count toward participation in the Derryfield Annual Fund?

While volunteering is a great way to support Derryfield, and the School couldn’t operate without the help of each volunteer, the Annual Fund is equally important. It helps keep the School’s tuition affordable and competitive and allows Derryfield to hire the best faculty possible. Therefore, we are not able to count volunteer hours towards annual fund participation.
  • Can I designate my gift to a specific program (i.e. athletics, arts, financial aid)?

Giving an unrestricted gift will allow the School to allocate funds where they are needed most, but yes, you have the ability to designate any amount to athletics, arts, or financial aid.
  • Can I make my contribution on a credit card or with appreciated securities?

Yes; you may transfer appreciated securities to Derryfield, pay with a credit card, cash, or check. Please visit for all the ways of giving to the Annual Fund.
