- The Hampson Family

“Our family will all be crying at graduation this year, as we send our exchange student off to college.  The time he has spent with us has enriched our family. The program is a wonderful opportunity for the exchange student, as well as the host family.”

All international students live with families of current or past students, families associated with Derryfield, or families of faculty and staff members. After students are accepted and enrolled, we work with you to match you with the best possible host family. International students are expected to become fully integrated with the lives of their host families, participating in family events and helping out with chores expected by individual families. This immersion helps to create a mutually beneficial relationship between host family and student. The student sees his or her conversational English improve quickly, all while establishing life-long relationships with members of his or her host family!

Hosting Students

Hosting one of Derryfield's international students is a great way for your family to learn about another country's customs and culture, and a chance to look at the world in a new way.  Many of our host families continue communicating with their international student after they leave, often developing into life-long relationships!
Host families receive a monthly stipend to cover the costs of having another child in one's home.

Expectations for the host family include:
  • Welcoming another family member into your home, including them in family events, and expecting them to participate in family life, including chores.
  • Providing transportation to and from school or driving the student to the bus, if applicable.
  • Providing transportation to after-school events and other activities, within reason.
  • Providing age-appropriate oversight of homework preparation. International students are provided with tutors, if necessary, so host families should not have to help routinely with school work.
  • Willingness to learn about another culture and country, and to add a new member to your family!
