Merit Scholarships

List of 2 items.

  • Founders Scholars Program

This program recognizes students who exhibit qualities that the founding members of The Derryfield School envisioned--qualities of respect for diverse ideas, beliefs and cultures; commitment to personal integrity and fairness; and willingness to institute thoughtful change. Academic performance and extracurricular involvement are also factors in the decision-making process.
Number of scholarships awarded: Variable by year.
Eligibility: Founders Scholars awards are granted to both new and returning students at the discretion of the Merit Committee. New students are evaluated within the context of their admission application to determine eligibility for this scholarship. All currently enrolled students in good standing are eligible for consideration, and therefore do not need to submit a scholarship application. Founders Scholarships are limited in number and are only awarded to a select few. Grants range from $2,500-$10,000 and vary in duration. The total number of grants available also varies annually.
  • Core Values Scholars Program

This program seeks to recognize bright, motivated students who demonstrate qualities that will add meaning and vitality to Derryfield’s core values.
Number of scholarships awarded: Up to three each year.
Eligibility: All new students applying to Derryfield are eligible. Students are selected based on responses to essay questions, as well as academic and extracurricular talents. Grants are in the amount of $15,000. Please download and complete the Core Values Application using the MERIT APPLICATION button to the right.

Steps for Applying

It’s easy to apply! New students complete a merit application (see the Merit Application button to the right) while following the regular admission application process. All documents must be received by the Admission Office by February 1, 2017. Students who have completed the entire admission application process AND a merit application by the deadline will be eligible for consideration.

List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • Do I apply for admission to the School and Merit Scholarships at the same time?

Yes. New students must complete both the admission application and the merit application. All documents must be received by the Admission Office by February 1, 2017. Only students who have completed the entire admission application process AND a merit application by the deadline will be eligible for consideration.
  • What is the difference between Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships? Can I apply for both?

The need-based financial aid program at The Derryfield School is designed to help make a Derryfield education accessible to qualified students who could not otherwise afford the cost of attending. Awards to families who meet these criteria are made by the Financial Aid Committee. Merit scholarships are awarded to students based upon academic and extracurricular talents; a family’s ability to afford tuition is not taken into consideration. Merit Scholarship decisions are made by the Merit Scholarship Committee.

Students may apply for both Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships.

  • How are Merit Scholarship decisions made?

Mission specific merit scholarships based on a student’s academic and extracurricular talents are awarded annually to new and returning students. All merit awards are overseen by the Merit Committee, chaired by the Head of School. This Committee is separate from the Admission and Financial Aid Committees.
  • When are Merit Scholarship decisions made?

Merit Scholarship decisions are made after admission decisions have been made. All accepted students are eligible for consideration for the Founders Scholarship Program. All accepted students who completed the Merit Application are eligible for consideration for the Core Values Program. Applicants will be notified of their status by the Head of School as part of the March 10, 2017 mailing. Students receiving scholarships must accept or decline the award April 10, 2017.
  • If tuition increases, will Merit Scholarships increase?

The Core Values awards are fixed amounts. Students in good standing receive the same award for each year stated within their merit letter. The remaining parent contribution toward tuition is likely to increase slightly each year.
Founders Scholar awards are offered at the discretion of the Merit Committee. Grants range from $2,500-$10,000, and are reviewed annually. Receiving an award for one year does not guarantee receipt of an award in subsequent years.
