Derryfield Receives $2 Million Endowment for Scholarship

Founded in 1964, The Derryfield School provides a challenging and nurturing education to bright, motivated young people whose families seek an independent day school. Cathie Wlaschin, Executive Director of the Malone Family Foundation notes, "With its very capable students, highly respected faculty, and innovative and creative programs, The Derryfield School provides us with an optimal opportunity to find and accommodate talented Malone scholars in New Hampshire. We're confident that Derryfield will be an exceptional Malone partner."

Derryfield was invited by the Foundation to be one of 45 schools across the nation to participate in a rigorous application process and was chosen as the sole New Hampshire Malone Partner School. Derryfield is among eleven schools to be awarded endowments this year to create Malone Scholar Programs. Head of School Craig Sellers commented, "The mission of the Malone Foundation is a perfect match for one of Derryfield's core long-term goals: access. It is particularly gratifying that the Malone Foundation has invested in us as their educational partner in New Hampshire. This is more than a transformative gift for talented students in our area - it is an endorsement of our exemplary faculty and an investment in our program. We are thrilled."

Derryfield already boasts a thriving arts program with a popular summer repertory theatre and a state-of-the-art turf field that serves as home to several state championship teams. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges recently commended the School's academic program for providing students with individual pathways and flexibility of curricular paths that enable every student to achieve success. The NEASC report observes, "One of the true strengths of the School is the way faculty and staff support, cultivate, challenge, and develop every student. Students are known and loved here and are celebrated for their unique gifts and talents."

Derryfield has a history of fostering the talents of motivated students who have gone on to become leaders in the New Hampshire community and beyond, including Gary Hirshberg '72, founder of Stonyfield Farm; Ryan Abood '97, founder of GourmetGiftBaskets.com; Cam Brensinger '94, founder of NEMO Equipment; Brad Benson '78, owner of Benson Lumber & Hardware; and Rich Sigel '81, Chief of Staff for Governor John Lynch and actress Sarah Silverman '89. More recently, Derryfield graduates have earned national recognition, including the selection of Matt Boelig '02 and Kaitlin Fink '11 as U.S. Presidential Scholars, and Emma LeBlanc '05 as a 2012 Rhodes Scholar.

The Derryfield community will celebrate this gift by welcoming its first Malone Scholar to campus this fall. The School already has several exceptional candidates in its admission pool to be considered for this honor. This partnership will ultimately enable Derryfield to offer in perpetuity up to one full scholarship in each of grades seven through twelve to gifted and talented students. This gift further affirms Derryfield's long term vision of providing access to an unparalleled education.

Mr. Sellers concluded, "When I learned that the Malone Foundation was seeking schools in each of the 50 states ‘where it's not only OK to be smart, but encouraged,' I knew we would make a great Malone Partner School."
