Poetry Out Loud at Derryfield
Each year Derryfield participates in Poetry Out Loud (POL), a national program that “encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.” Sophomore Steph Livingston represented Derryfield School at the semi-final competition on February 21 at New England College. Livingston presented two poems: Ozymamdias, by Percy Bysshe Shelley and Keeping Things Whole by Mark Strand.
Participants are required to present two poems, chosen from a curated collection that is updated annually. Poems vary in length, style and time period. Judges evaluate on the following criteria: physical presence; voice and articulation; dramatic appropriateness; evidence of understanding; and overall performance. There are five performance judges and an accuracy judge at each competition.
The New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud championship will be held at Representatives Hall at the NH State House on March 17. The winner of the state competition will participate in the POL national finals, held in May in Washington, DC.
