Perfect Season for Middle School Girls Basketball
Ed Lemire, Coach
The Pike School from Andover, MA, brought a strong girls’ middle school basketball team (12-2) to the Holland Court at Derryfield for our final game of the 2022-23 season. Our girls felt that they had one goal left, an undefeated season.
The first quarter went back and forth as both teams played with intensity. At the end of the period, Derryfield held an 11-7 lead over the visitors. Our girls picked up the offense in the second stanza, scoring 16, but Pike tossed in 9. DS led 27-16 at the intermission. The third quarter was more of the same back and forth action, with the Cougars edging out the visitors 9-7 for a 36-23 lead going into the final eight minutes of the season. Pike’s top player, who had 10 points in the first half, heated up down the stretch scoring 10 more to help Pike win the final period 12-8. However, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome–the end result was a 44-35 Derryfield victory, and a perfect 18-0 season for our middle school team.
Only four DS players scored in this contest. Ariel Berger led with fourteen points followed by Bre McCabe with twelve. Anna Fazelat added ten points. Brielle Evensen closed out the scoring with 8 points. Anna and Bre were the top rebounders with eight apiece. Ariel pulled down six missed shots, Anna grabbed five, and Kelsey Beekman snagged four. Rounding out the rebounding was Lila Hanning with two, Anny Naje and Mackenzie Lacroix with one each.
Our journey that began on November 7, 2022 is full of treasured memories for the players, coaches, and fans. How can anyone forget the clinic that the girls put on in the league championship game? Thanks to everyone who supported DS girls middle school basketball in this perfect season.
