Cougars Maul Mules
Derryfield travelled to Newmarket and led from the opening tap to the final buzzer to post a 56-30 victory and close the regular season with a 12-4 record. The Cougars play in a JV tournament at Farmington on Saturday, February 18th.
Sam Fazelat controlled the game-opening jump ball, and tapped it to Billy Gardner. He drove down the left side and bounced a perfect pass to Alex Murray who flipped home a layup for a 2-0 lead. The home team never caught up.
In an unusual quarter, the Cougars scored all 16 of their points inside the arc. Alex scored again in the middle of the period. Sam and Elias Kanteres each scored twice. Billy and Nate Boudreau each converted driving layups for a 16-5 Derryfield lead at the end of the first.
Nate scored 8 more in the second, and Logan Purvis scored twice inside to increase the Derryfield lead to 31-17 at halftime.
Some full-court defensive pressure by Newmarket in the third quarter sparked the home team to cut the apparently comfortable double-digit lead to single digits, but Alex calmed the team and its fans by netting two 3-pointers. Hunter Crawford and Ben LaFlamme played solid defense, and Derryfield led 43-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Billy dropped in a 3 to start the fourth. Then with Logan O’Leary and Aaron Felings on top, Connor Bradley in the middle, and Jon Martinez and Sam Clarke on the wings, Derryfield’s 2-3 zone secured the win. Jon from the left side and Logan from the top of the key each hit a 3-pointer to close out the scoring at 56-30.
Nate, Alex and Sam scored 14, 10 and 9 respectively. Elias had 7, and Billy and Jon each added 5. Logan, Sam and Elias led the rebounders, and Billy, Alex, Nate and Elias all had impressive assists.
