Late Rally Falls Just Short
In early January, Derryfield travelled to Hinsdale and led all the way to a 45-40 victory, but the Pacers turned the tables on the Cougars in their rematch on the Derryfield hardwood. Despite a dazzling fourth quarter rally by the home team, Hinsdale held on for a 53-51 win that dropped Derryfield to 11-4 for the season.
Hinsdale scored from the inside and from outside the arc to take a 14-8 lead against the Cougars’ man-to-man defense at the end of the first quarter. Derryfield switched to a 2-3 zone in the second quarter to no avail. Hinsdale dropped four 3-pointers to build a 32-18 lead at halftime, and added a point to that lead to take a 44-29 lead into the fourth.
A quick Pacer 3, set the visitors’ lead at 47-29. Then, back in a more determined man-to-man, Billy Gardner, Alex Murray, Logan Purvis, Sam Fazelat and Elias Kanteres shut down the Pacer offense, took control of the boards, and outscored Hinsdale 19-0 to take a 48-47 lead with under a minute to play.
Billy and Sam started the run with a pair of 3s. Logan scored inside. Billy flipped in two floaters. Sam hit another 3, and scored inside on the next possession. Then Sam netted a 10-foot turnaround jumper from the left side to put Derryfield ahead, and bring the fans to their feet. But Hinsdale called a timeout, regrouped and secured the win.
Billy and Sam led the scorers with 14 each. Logan and Alex each had 8, and Elias added 7.
