JVs Triumph in Overtime
Following an impressive start, Derryfield fell behind visiting Holy Family in the second quarter and trailed all the way into the fourth. At the end of regulation, the Cougars had pulled even with the Eagles at 41-41. In the ensuing OT, Derryfield prevailed for a 53-49 win that improved the team’s record to 8-1.
The game was a rematch between two strong JV teams. Derryfield had trailed late in the fourth quarter at HF in December, but a strong 13-0 game-ending run had earned the Cougars a 59-47 W.
Trying to avoid such last-minute drama, Derryfield opened the game passing well on offense and playing tight man-to-man defense. Sam Fazelat controlled the opening tap and Billy Gardner scored to put the home team on top 2-0. Elias Kanteres and Logan Purvis added hoops inside, and Billy netted a pair of foul shots to set the score at 8-0.
Then the offense sputtered and there were too many lapses on defense. Holy Family outscored Derryfield 20-10 over the second and third quarters to take a 28-21 lead heading into the fourth.
Then it seemed that the JV Cougars remembered how they had started the game. Billy swished a 3-pointer from the right side and Sam matched him from the left wing. Alex Murray followed by scoring a driving layup. It was the team’s second 8-0 run of the game and gave them a 29-28 lead early in the final period.
Billy, Elias, Alex and Sam combined to score 20 over the final eight minutes, but the Eagles’ 13 points set the scoreboard at 41-41. The Cougar’s fourth quarter dominance continued in OT. Billy flipped in a floater and added two foul shots. Alex hit a key 3-pointer. Sam swished two from the foul line, and then dropped a game-clinching 3-pointer, again from the left wing.
Billy hit 20. Sam added 13. Elias, Alex and Logan scored 9, 6 and 5 respectively in a game that every point mattered. Logan led the rebounders with strong support from Sam and Elias.
