JVs Lose First at PCA
The JVs’ seven-game winning streak was ended in overtime at PCA. The homestanding Eagles eked out a 47-46 win against the visiting Cougars in a game that featured a dozen ties and lead changes over the final minutes of regulation and three extra minutes of OT. Derryfield is now 7-1 at the mid-season mark.
Both teams started slowly. Hunter Crawford scored first from the right baseline, and Sam Fazelat netted a 3-pointer to pop Derryfield into a 5-0 first quarter lead. But the Cougars only answer to three inside hoops by PCA was one bucket inside by Logan Purvis for a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Then the Eagles outscored the Cougars 11-6 in the second quarter for a 17-13 lead at halftime.
Derryfield broke out of its offensive doldrums after the break. Logan scored inside. Alex Murray stole the ball and made a driving layup, and later dropped a pair of 3s. And Sam scored inside, outside and from the line for 10 points to post a 20-point third quarter for Derryfield and take a 33-30 lead with 8 minutes to play.
But PCA tightened its man-to-man defense and led 39-36 with only 0:20 on the scoreboard clock. It took a last second 3-pointer by Alex from the left side to get the Cougars into overtime. The home team’s defense stayed tough and the Eagles top scorer his 4 of 6 from the foul line to secure the victory.
Sam and Alex each hit four 3-pointers and a deuce. Sam added 4 of 4 from the line for a team-leading 18. Alex added 14. Logan scored 7. Hunter had 4, and Billy Gardner’s 3-pointer was half the team’s second quarter total.
