JV Frosh Edge Campbell Frosh
Campbell brought its Freshmen boys’ basketball team to Derryfield, so the Cougars modified their JV roster to exclude their five juniors. The Derryfield frosh managed a less-than-spectacular 40-36 win that for simplicity’s sake is being included in the JVs’ season to boost that record to 7-0.
A lackluster first quarter ended with the teams tied at 5-5. But Derryfield’s offense warmed up in a 19-point second quarter and the home team led 24-10 at halftime. Sam Fazelat and Jon Martinez each hit from outside the arc. Nate Boudreau, Ben LaFlamme and Newt Kershaw each dropped mid-range deuces. And Connor Bradley hit a pair of foul shots.
But the visitors outscored the home team in the third quarter to stay close entering the fourth. Then Campbell’s pressure defense and Derryfield’s cold shooting combined to cut the Cougars’ lead to 36-34 with 1:38 remaining to play.
As Derryfield held the ball to protect its slim advantage, Campbell tightened its defense and fouled intentionally. Connor, Newt and Jon each hit from the foul line to secure the 40-36 victory. For the game, Nate and Sam each scored 9. Newt and Connor added 7 and 6 respectively. And Ben and Jon each scored 4.
