The Alpine team finally kicked off the race season with a fantastic race at Mount Sunapee. We had sunny skies and firm snow for a morning GS and afternoon SL, with 11 teams in attendance. We brought 20 of our athletes to check out the fierce competition in Division 4. The girls started off the morning strong with a second place finish with 360 points, behind rival Profile. Freshman Teagan Peabody led the girls with a 9th place finish, Junior Lilly Handwerk was right behind her in 10th, Freshman Phoebe Handwerk took 15th, Senior Captain Alyssa Shula in 18th, Sophomore Aubrey Webb in 19th, Junior Livi Brar in 24th, Sophomore Alex Benson in 31st and Junior Charlotte Smith in 39th. Way to go, girls!
The boys also skied really well to land in third place for GS with 363 points, behind Sunapee and Profile, but definitely within striking distance! Senior Captain Logan Goldberg had the 2 fastest runs of the day to put him in 1st, Freshman Scott Connors was right behind him to place 3rd, Senior Captain Jack Schroeder placed 8th, and finishing our scoring was Freshman John Small in 31st. Next in was Senior Artem Yurovskiy in 33rd, then Junior Ben Rosenthal in 37th, Junior Zach Rosenthal in 39th, Junior Gabe Poritzky in 42nd, Junior Jack Steward in 45th, and Junior Parker Lebiedz in 48th. Freshman Jake Oliviero and Myles Rozen both fell on their first runs, but came back with fast second runs.
The afternoon Slalom was challenging with a lot athletes unable to finish, missing gates, or having to hike to finish their runs across the whole field, Yet our girls put together some solid performances to take second place with 364 points behind Profile. Lilly stepped it up to place 4th, Teagan in 5th, Livi in 17th, Aubrey in 18th, and Phoebe in 21st. The boys placed third with 357 points behind LinWood and Kearsarge. Jake led the boys with a 3rd place finish, Jack Schroeder placed 6th, John 13th, and Zach finished out the scoring in 27th. Logan hiked to finish in 29th, Ben in 32nd, Parker in 34th, Jack Steward in 46th, Gabe in 48th, and Myles also hiked for a 55th place. Scott and Artem fell first runs, but Scott had the fastest time on run 2. Awesome job boys!
It was a great first race with some really fast runs, great attitudes, and fantastic team spirit. We enjoyed having Coach Jodi pay us a visit. Thank you to our super helpful parents, running jackets, manning the radio, and taking charge of the bibs. It's going to be a great season! Go DS!
