Another Late Game Victory

The JVs travelled to Hinsdale and won 45-40 to remain unbeaten at 6-0 for the season.  But, once again, a win was not secured until the game’s final seconds.  Back in December, It had taken a 13-4 fourth quarter to defeat CCA, and it had taken a game-ending 13-0 run to triumph at Holy Family.
And after leading at Hinsdale from the opening tap until well into the fourth quarter, Derryfield stumbled late in the game and temporarily lost the lead.  But the Cougars tightened their defense and took better care of the ball to close the game with a 9-0 run.
Billy Gardner had scored off the opening tap, and added a second inside hoop later in the first quarter.  His backcourt mate Alex Murray hit a pair of 3-pointers and converted a driving layup.  And Elias Kanteres netted a 3-pointer to pop the Cougars into a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sam Fazelat warmed up in the second quarter, hitting a pair of mid-range baskets and then dropping a 3-pointer from the right side.  Billy also hit from outside the arc.  Logan Purvis scored inside, and Ben LaFlamme netted a mid-range jumper to increase the Derryfield lead to 29-18 at halftime.
But the Cougar shooters cooled off, and the Pacers got hot after the break.  The home team led visiting Derryfield 40-36 with only 3:22 on the scoreboard clock.  The Cougars switched out of their 2-3 zone into a tight man-to-man matchup, and shut down Hinsdale’s hoopers.
And on offense, Billy, Alex and Elias handled the Pacer press.  Hunter Crawford scored from the right baseline.  On the next possession, Sam drove the right baseline and scored inside to tie it at 40-40.
Billy, Alex and Elias controlled play, dribbling and passing over the Pacer double-teams to Sam and Logan. Sam passed to Logan for a hoop to put Derryfield ahead.  On the next possession, Alex caught an offensive rebound in the air and flipped it in off the backboard.  Elias hit a foul shot to close the scoring and end the game 45-40 for the Cougars.
Alex led the scorers with 12.  Sam added 9.  Billy and Elias each had 7.  Logan scored 6 including a third quarter full court driving layup.  Hunter and Ben’s baskets were both timely.  And Connor Bradley, Logan O’Leary and Jon Martinez contributed defensive support and rebounding to another end-of-the-game Derryfield victory.
