Derryfield Tops Mascenic
Derryfield held off visiting Mascenic with solid play in the deciding fourth quarter for a 40-36 victory that improved the team’s slate to 5-0 heading into the Winter Break.
Three hoops by Logan Purvis, a 3-pointer from Hunter Crawford, and deuces from Alex Murray and Billy Gardner sparked the Cougar JVs to a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the visitors outscored the home team in the second quarter to cut the Cougar lead to 24-22 at halftime.
And the Mascenic defense held the Cougars to a mere three baskets, all by Billy, in the third quarter. But the Mascenic lead was only 31-30 entering the final period.
Derryfield rose to the occasion offensively and defensively. Sam Fazelat scored three key hoops, and Billy and Logan each added one. And the Derryfield D shut down Mascenic yielding only 5 points to secure the win.
Billy led the scorers with 14. Sam added 11. And Logan, always a force on the boards, tallied a season-high 8.
