Strong Finish earns Fourth Win

For the second game in a row, Derryfield temporarily lost a long-held lead in the fourth quarter, but settled down in the closing minutes to secure another win.  Solid defense and smooth shooting from the foul line combined to post a 59-47 defeat of Holy Family and improve the JVs’ record to 4-0.
Billy Gardner scored 12 and Sam Fazelat had 10 points as the visiting Cougars built a 26-21 halftime lead on the Griffins’ hardwood.  Derryfield’s 2-3 zone defense with Billy, Nate Boudreau and Elias Kanteres alternating on top, Logan Purvis in the center and Sam, Hunter Crawford, Andy Dell’Orfano, Connor Bradley and Jon Martinez alternating on the baseline battled the taller Griffins on the boards but yielded too many 3-pointers to the opponents’ lone marksman.
So the team switched to a man-to-man defense in the third quarter.  Sam and Elias led the scoring, but the Cougars added only a single point to take a 42-36 lead into the final period.
Then the Griffins’ center attacked the hoop and scored with a couple offensive rebounds to bring the home fans to their feet and pop the home team into a 47-46 lead with 3:22 on the clock.  Elias triggered the game-deciding run netting a 3-pointer from the left corner.  Logan and Hunter each scored inside, and as the Griffins ratcheted up their pressure, Billy (4 for 4) and Nate (2 for 2) secured the win from the foul line.  An impressive closing 13-0 run.
Sam and Billy led the scorers with 20 and 16 respectively.  Elias added 11 highlighted by a pair of 3s.  Nate converted 3 acrobatic drives in addition to his fourth quarter foul shots for 8.  Everyone contributed to the hard work on the boards that eventually paid off in the win.
