COUGAR JVS HOLD OFF CCA
With the momentum swinging back and forth between visiting Concord Christian Academy and homestanding Derryfield, Billy Gardner and Sam Fazelat led the offense and Logan Purvis anchored the defense to earn the Cougar JVs a 46-39 victory that boosted their record to 3-0 in this still young season.
CCA dropped in four 3-pointers to build a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Sam’s 8 points kept Derryfield close.
Then in the second quarter, Sam stayed hot netting a trio of 3-pointers. Nate Boudreau added another, and Billy and Logan each scored inside. At the other end of the floor, the Cougar’s 2-3 zone limited the Eagles to two baskets and Derryfield took a 27-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
But CCA reclaimed the momentum and took back the lead by outscoring Derryfield 15-6 in the third quarter.Forcing Cougar turnovers with their pressure man-to-man defense, and scoring the opening bucket of the fourth put the Eagles ahead 37-33. Billy made a driving layup and added the foul shot to set the scoreboard at 37-36, but CCA answered with a pair of foul shots to make it 39-36 in the middle of the quarter.
Then Sam hit a 3 from the left wing to tie it at 39-39, and the growing Friday night crowd exploded. The roars continued as CCA missed and Billy was fouled and sank two foul shots with two minutes to play.
The defense held. In addition to Logan’s work in the middle, Sam, Andy Dell’Orfano, Ben LaFlamme, Connor Bradley and Jon Martinez rebounded and sealed off the Eagles’ baseline drives. On top, Billy, Nate, and Newt Kershaw shut down the CCA 3-point shooters. Ben hit a shot from the left baseline and Billy finished the scoring from the foul line.
Sam scored 17 in the first half and finished with 24. Billy scored the 6 points that secured the win in the fourth quarter and finished with 13.
