Barsi Chosen Art Educator of the Year
Elaine Loft
The Awards Committee of the New Hampshire Art Educators’ Association (NHAEA) has selected Becky Barsi, co-chair of the art department, as the Art Educator of the year 2022-2023. The NHAEA announcement letter to Barsi noted, “The committee members were extremely impressed with the depth and breadth of your program, your long -standing community, statewide, and national outreach, extensive experience with the creative process through digital platforms, and how you incorporate your own artistic thinking into your teaching.”
In her nomination essay on behalf of Barsi, Associate Head of School Lindley Schutz wrote, “Dotted throughout the Derryfield School are the evidence of Becky Barsi’s magic as a leader of creative expression. Becky has found fabulous ways to energize even the self-described ‘least likely to pursue the arts.’ At heart she is a maker--of her own work, of the life of an artist, of creating the opportunities for others to engage in making or interacting with art, and of genuine, caring relationships that allow others to feel seen in an inspiring way.”
Barsi herself said, “It is an honor to be nominated and recognized by the NHAEA. I have been involved with the National Art Educators Association since I was in college, and the network of students and teachers I have been able to work and collaborate with has not only inspired me, it has invigorated my classroom teaching and ultimately my students.”
Barsi will be recognized by the NHAEA at the Fall Conference on Saturday, October 22, 2022, and will represent New Hampshire at the National Convention being held in San Antonio, TX in April of 2023. In June of 2023, she will be recognized at the “ED’dies, New Hampshire’s Excellence in Education awards’ program.
Located in Manchester, NH, The Derryfield School is a private day school for grades 6-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
