Science & Innovation Center Named for Dr. Carter

Elaine Loft
In honor of Dr. Mary Halpin Carter’s service to the community during her nine years as Head of the Derryfield School, the Board of Trustees announced on May 26 the dedication of the Carter Center for Science & Innovation. Board Chair, Susan Rand King, remarked:

“This space is a permanent place on campus that embodies the work Dr. Carter has done to transform the campus, as well as the academic program and vision, during her tenure. Her passion for innovation is captured in this space, as well as the joy of students working together, and a gathering space for our community.”

Carter is leaving Derryfield on June 30 to become Head of School at St. Luke’s in New Caanan, Connecticut. She joined Derryfield in 1997 as Admission Director, and is the second-longest serving head in the school’s history.

In a letter to the Derryfield community, announcing Carter’s departure, Rand King noted:

“Mary is to be commended for her critical role in the development of the academic program vision, which transformed the experience for all students, families, and faculty. This vision changed the way students are taught and restructured the curriculum with the focus on 21st-century skills, application of knowledge to real-world problems, project-based learning, student research, and a redesign of all courses, along with a new school schedule designed to calm the pace of the day.”

At the event commemorating the dedication of the Science & Innovation Center in her honor, Dr. Carter bid farewell to the Derryfield community:

“I have been so fortunate to partner with genuine, committed, smart and caring colleagues, trustees, student leaders, alumni and parents. My wish is that the phenomenal people of Derryfield continue to dream bold visions, devise plans to reach them, methodically and joyfully accomplish the action steps in those plans, then watch that incremental change keep adding up to the realization of our dreams for students.”
