JV Netmen Net Another Win

The JVs topped Pinkerton 6-3 on the SNHU courts on May 24 to close their season without a loss at 3-0.  Once again it was the Cougars’ balance and depth that produced the team triumph.
At first singles, senior Luke Rosenthal bounced back from a tough loss at Manchester Memorial by outhitting Pinkerton’s ace to win 6-4.  Junior Jaisen Soundar and freshman Andrew Smith played well as expected, but both fell to their Pinkerton opponents.
Then the Derryfield balance and depth kicked in as the bottom half of the singles lineup swept the final three singles matches.  Junior Evan Zhang recovered from a slow start that had him trailing 0-2 to take control and earn a 6-3 win at fourth singles.  Freshman Deavon Moore at #5 and soph Seb Parra at #6 both blanked their opponents for a pair of 6-0 wins that gave Derryfield a 4-2 lead going into the three doubles matches.
In extra singles matches, soph Tommy Rilee hit his way to a solid 6-1 win.  Junior Artem Yurovskiy and soph Zach Rosenthal added two tiebreaker wins.  Zach controlled his tiebreaker 7-3 for the 7-6 final, and Artem ripped a two-handed backhand winner to secure his 7-6 victory.  Junior Alex Nadeau put an exclamation point on the team’s depth, winning 6-3 for a 4-0 sweep for Derryfield in the extra singles matches.
Timing of the doubles matches enabled the third doubles duo or Andrew and Deavon to secure the team win by knocking out Pinkerton at third doubles 6-0.  The second year junior duo of Conor Barto and Evan added the sixth point for Derryfield with a solid 6-3 win at second doubles.  Still on the court were the Rosenthal brothers, Luke and Zach, at first doubles.  They scrambled and volleyed well, but Pinkerton’s team prevailed 6-4.
In the lone extra doubles match, sophomores Roman Sckaal and Fin Pellerin displayed improved serving and ground strokes, but their opponents’net play earned Pinkerton a 6-1 win..
The JVs’ 2022 season is accurately summarized a single word – improvement.  The 2020 season was COVID-cancelled.  The 2021 season was a COVID-modified 0-2.  This year each player won at least one singles or doubles match, and the team won all three of its matches.
