Derryfield Announces Ninth Head of School
The Derryfield School announced on March 17 the appointment of its ninth Head of School, Andrew Chappell, effective July 1, 2022. Derryfield began a national search after the long-standing Head of School, Dr. Mary Halpin Carter, announced last fall she would be leaving Derryfield to become the Head of School at St. Luke’s in New Canaan, CT.
A welcome letter sent to the greater Derryfield community by the chair of the search committee, Lauren Hines, and board chair, Susan Rand King introduced Chappell:
With more than 24 years of experience in independent schools, Andy is joining us from the esteemed Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, MA, where he has served as the Assistant Headmaster for Programs since 2020. During his tenure at Roxbury Latin, Andy has advanced through several academic and internal affairs positions. He has served as a Director of Admission, Director of Studies and Strategic Initiatives, as well as a Class Dean, teacher, coach, and advisor.
An alumnus of the University of Virginia with a master’s degree from Dartmouth College, Andy has shown his deep commitment to faculty development and support. He has led several Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives throughout his tenure at Roxbury Latin is the consummate professional and is very involved in all aspects of the school. Andy understands the importance of balancing the core traditions and values of an institution, while at the same time moving it forward into an ever-changing world.
For all these reasons, and after a rigorous process, the search committee recommended Andy enthusiastically to the Board of Trustees, who unanimously voted Andy Chappell as our 9th and next Head of School.
Located in Manchester, NH, The Derryfield School is a private day school for grades 6-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
