Musical Ensembles Win Big in Westfield
The musicians of Derryfield were up before the sun on Saturday morning, April 30, in order to leave school at 6:00 a.m. to attend a competition in Westfield MA. 93 students attended the trip, which included the Middle School Chorus, the Upper School Concert Choir, and a combined middle school and upper school instrumental ensemble. They returned home at the end of the day with three trophies.
The entourage left Derryfield in darkness and arrived 2.5 crowded bus hours later at Westfield High School, where they performed for the judges who scored the Derryfield students against middle and high school ensembles from all over New England.
The Upper School Concert Choir took 2nd place in their division, missing first place by only one point (out of 200). Caden McLain and Savannah Davis performed solos. The Middle School Chorus took home the 1st place trophy in the Middle School Division. Finally, 8th grader Audrey Labbe won a medal for being the best featured soloist of the day for all choirs, both middle and high school.
Alex Hunton and the student performers presented the three trophies to Head of School, Dr. Mary Halpin Carter, at the weekly Community Meeting on Monday, May 2.
Located in Manchester, NH, The Derryfield School is a private day school for grades 6-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
