International Women's Summit

Through connections with other academic programs, Derryfield students are able to participate in programs that connect them to students throughout the world who share similar interests.

To celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8), Derryfield junior Madison Viger attended a virtual summit that brought together a diverse group of students to learn about various issues women and girls face on a global level. The goal of the event was to encourage young women to be leaders, in order to take action to advance gender equality on the world stage. After hearing from guest speakers, the participants collaborated in small intercultural teams to design service projects with the goal of engaging with both local and global communities.

After the event, Madison reported back to Dr. Brandon Gauthier, Director of Global Education.

“Overall it was a really enlightening experience. By far the best experience for me was hearing from the guest speakers–one of them in particular, Mariana Sanz De Santamaria, had a very impactful presentation. She is the founder of Poderosas Colombia, an organization that provides comprehensive education surrounding gender and sexuality to low-income women and girls in Colombia. We also got to hear from author Alexandra Kleeman, and I got the chance to ask her some questions about the craft of her latest novel, which was really exciting for me! When we split off into our age groups I got the opportunity to discuss the intricacies of gendered issues with my peers, and I learned so much from the other students and from the facilitator. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”
