Olympian Comes Home to DS

Derryfield crew was incredibly honored to have a very special alumna return to help coach the team this fall. Regina Salmons, a member of the class of 2004, discovered rowing as a student at Derryfield, where she won the youth single at New Hampshire Championships her senior year and tried out for the junior national team. She went on to row at the University of Pennsylvania and for the United States National Team, where she won gold medals in the four and eight at the 2016 Under 23 world rowing championships and a gold medal in the pair at the 2018 Under 23 world championships. Since graduating, she has been training at the national team training camp in Princeton, NJ, earning a seat in the U.S. women’s eight that placed fourth this year at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Rowing accomplishments aside, Regina has provided amazing support to our rowers this fall. It has been a stressful season for our students, as they return to 'normal' while still living in unusual circumstances. Regina’s presence at the boathouse nearly every day as someone who has recently been through the academic and athletic rigors of Derryfield served as a role model for these student-athletes that goes well beyond rowing. As Regina said to the team at the New Hampshire Championships, "Though I recognize that many of the kids will not love rowing the same way I do or continue beyond DS, I hope that this program gives them the tools to chase their own dreams and become the people they are meant to be. That they each find their own Olympics to chase after - these kids are all such capable, strong, and beautiful humans. I see pieces of myself in all of them, and I am in awe of their continued bravery in showing up to practice authentically."

It is with great pleasure that we were able to dedicate Derryfield’s first brand new boat for the girls’ program in over a decade to Derryfield’s first Olympian, Regina Salmons. It was apparent during the dedication that not only did the team benefit from Regina's presence this fall, but also she took something from the experience. "Not only has having this boat named after me moved me beyond words, but the chance to work with this current group of Derryfielders has meant the world to me... After three years of grueling training, seeing their smiling faces every day has truly brought the joy of rowing back to me this fall. And I will carry it with me as I embark on my next Olympic journey towards Paris in 2024."

Regina will have a large cheering section in the Derryfield community as she returns to training at the Olympic Training Center in New Jersey.
