A Portrait of Bosnian-American Life

Each year, the Simeon Kass Award for Writing and Humanistic Inquiry is given to a member of the senior class who demonstrates an interest to learn beyond what surfaces in day-to-day life and demonstrates outstanding writing skills, an appreciation of other cultures, a burning inquisitiveness, and the disposition to take a position and challenge opinions. The Kass Award was established by the Boelig family in memory of a beloved family member to recognize those who have a passion for the written word and the human experience. Simeon Kass was a journalist and Jewish Parisian who survived the Holocaust and, despite the death of his mother and two young brothers at Auschwitz, showed an enduring resilience, curiosity, and love of life. Though they were distant relatives connecting across the Atlantic, Matt '02 and Derek '05 adored their “Uncle Sim.”

During a recent community meeting, Philanthropy Advisor Jenna Wolf '05 presented the 2021 Simeon Kass Award for Writing and Humanistic Inquiry to Mirza Becirovic '22 for his essay, “A Portrait of Bosnian-American Life.” Read Mirza's essay here.
