Cougars Beaten By Boynton Offensive Attack 17-3
The Cougars took the field in New Ipswich to take on the perennially strong Boynton team for their second game of the season. Once again, Derryfield got off strong in their half of the first when 3B Keith Townsend singled and later scored on an RBI single by P/1B Andy Connarn. Boynton would score three in return in their half of the first off Connarn (2 innings, 3K’s). “We could tell the first time through their batting order that this Boynton team could hit,” commented Coach Blaisdell. “They hit the ball hard all day, and, when they didn’t hit it hard, the ball just seemed to find places to drop in.” Indeed, the Boynton offensive attack was relentless as they pushed across runs in every inning. In addition to the run in the first, the Cougars scored two in the third inning, including a fairly unconventional run scored by RF Benny Moses. Moses hit a cue shot off the end of his bat that dropped in front of the third baseman and took a 90-degree left turn. Then on the way to second he managed somehow to avoid the tag of the second baseman before scoring later on an RBI single by Townsend (2-for-2, 1 RBI). “You got to love Benny’s “Matrix” move to avoid that tag,” quipped Coach Blaisdell. SS Aidan Moavenian would score on the second RBI single for Connarn. Defensively Moavenian made a couple sharp plays at short and CF Alex Moore threw a runner out at second with a strong throw in the second. Coach Townsend pointed out that the Cougar outfield played a stronger game than in game one retrieving the ball cleanly and getting it into the infielders to hold runners from advancing. Jack Lewis struck out two batters in his pitching debut. “The key is to try to improve each game,” added Coach Townsend. The Cougars will play their home opener this Thursday against Chester (2-1).
