Derryfield rolls Crimson tide 9-0 (twice!)
On Monday and Tuesday the Cougars took on Concord High in back-to-back matches, one at home and one away. The boys played well on both days with no matches lost. Here are the highlights from both matches.
In singles the Derryfield boys came out firing, jumping out to leads on all courts. Jack Schroeder cleaned up at number one, crashing the net and earning an 8-1 victory. Christopher Lynch at second singles overcame his nerves to put away his opponent 8-5. Chris Van Natta cruised to victory 8-3, and Max Smith, Jack Krasnof and Billy Gardney were off the court quickly with 8-1 wins at the fourth through sixth spots.
In doubles Derryfield closed the door on the Tide with a flurry of winning volleys and big shots. Jack and Chris Lynch shut down their opponents 8-2, Chris Van Natta and Max won 8-2, and the freshman duo of Jack and Billy blanked their opponents 8-0.
The boys were elated in their win on the previous day and traveled to Concord for another matchup. The wind was howling and proved to be somewhat of an equalizer on certain courts, while helping us on others.
In singles Jack Schroeder was all set for an 8-0 victory, but dropped a game at 7-0, winning 8-1. Christopher Lynch came out firing and quickly put his opponent away 8-2. Chris Van Natta survived an onslaught of moon balls, finding himself down 5-6, but found his stride, winning 8-6. Max Smith could not find his big forehand in the first two games and dropped them, before rattling off the next eight games in a row in a great show of power and accuracy, winning 8-2. Jack Krasnof showed his versatility and all court style winning points from everywhere on the court, earning an 8-2 win. Billy Gardner was off the court in a blink of the eye, shutting down his opponent 8-0.
In doubles our number one and three teams rolled to victory with an 8-2 win at first dubs and an 8-1 win at the third spot. At number two doubles Chris Van Natta and Max Smith worked through their difficulties before finally coming together and putting a tough Concord team 8-6.
In future action we will take on Spaulding at home on Thursday, but we are setting our sights on a big match against a tough Hanover team next week.
