Derryfield vs. Epping Game 1
EPPING 61 – DERRYFIELD 52 Epping pulled away from Derryfield in the second half, and then held off a late Cougar charge for the win in the first of the teams’ home and home regular-season-ending series. The rematch is scheduled for Senior Night at Derryfield on Thursday, February 25. In an accurate preview of what was to follow, on the game’s initial possession, Jaxon Snyder drove into the lane and scored for Derryfield. Epping answered with an inside hoop, and hit a 3- pointer on the Blue Devils’ next possession. And a succession of ties and frequent lead changes followed throughout the first half. As the first quarter continued, Kaven Fitch hit a mid-range jumper. Jaxon hit a jumper from the left baseline. Charles Renvyle dropped in a foul shot. Janai Cruz drew a foul and hit two from the line. Jack Krasnof drove and scored. With 0:40 on the clock, Thomas Ferdinando stole the ball, dribble to the hoop, and deftly spun in a left-handed driving layup. And Thomas added an assist to Jack just before halftime to put Derryfield up 17-14 at halftime. Six Cougars had scored. Just the scoring balance that had pleased Coach Ed Meade in the Cougars’ two preceding games. In the middle of the second quarter, Marshall Reilly netted a 3-pointer from the left wing to make it 22-22, the sixth tie of the game following eight lead changes. But it turned out to the last of the game. Epping’s ace answered Marshall’s trey, and the Devils shut down the Cougars to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. Thomas and Kaven each dropped in a 3, and Charles netted a foul shot to cut the Epping lead to 32-30 early in the third quarter. Then the Devils’ D tightened, and the home team built at 48-33 lead at the end of the period. The home team extended its lead to 55-33 early in the fourth before the Derryfield offense reawakened. Again, balance was the key. Jaxon, Jack, John McDevitt and Janai all scored on driving layups. Griff Johnson hit three hoops inside. And Kaven closed the game with a 3 from the right wing. But the Cougars’ 19-6 run was too little too late. Kaven led the scorers with 10, and was a force on both boards. Janai added 9, and Jack scored 7. Jaxon and Griff each tallied 6.
