Derryfield vs. Sanborn Game 1
SANBORN 71 - DERRYFIELD 48
Division II Sanborn used full-court man-to-man defensive pressure to strike early and late en route to a 71-48 victory over Division IV Derryfield in a mid-season clash at the AWC.
Forcing turnovers and attacking their basket, the visiting Indians built a 16-3 lead by the middle of the first quarter. Settling down, and tightening their defense, the Cougars outscored Sanborn 6-2 over the next four minutes. Jaxon Snyder was fouled shooting from outside the arc, and converted all three foul shots. Soon thereafter, Kaven Fitch swished a 3-pointer from the right side.
Derryfield followed with a strong second quarter. John McDevitt passed to Jack Krasnof for an early Cougar hoop. Then Thomas Ferdinando scored from the outside, on a drive and from the foul line for 13 points as Derryfield matched Sanborn during a 19-19 fast-paced period.
Thomas opened the third quarter with a 3 from the left corner, and on the ensuing Derryfield possession, Janai Cruz matched him from the same spot. When John converted an offensive rebound for a deuce, Derryfield had cut the Sanborn lead to 42-36. But the visitors ran off 11 straight points to build a 53-38 lead at the end of the third, and protected it throughout the fourth to secure the win.
Thomas led Derryfield with 18. Jack scored 10, and Kaven added 7.
