Derryfield vs. Campbell (home)
Derryfield fell twice to Campbell as the Division III Cougars proved a bit too much for the Division IV Cougars. Yes, both teams were supported by the same mascots, but the Campbell players were about 4 or more inches taller than the Derryfield players when matched up in their man-to-man defense.
In the first contest on the Derryfield AWC hardwood, Campbell jumped out to a quick 10-1 lead in the game’s first two minutes. Then Derryfield settled down. John McDevitt scored on a floater in the lane. Jack Krasnof scored from the foul line. And Jaxon Snyder drove the baseline for 2 and added a foul shot on the next DS possession. Campbell led just 12-8 going into the second quarter.
And what a quarter of hoops it was! Derryfield attacked the basket. Jaxon, Jack, Janai Cruz and Thomas Ferdinando repeatedly dribbled deftly into the lane and scored or drew fouls and converted from the line. But at the other end, Campbell bombed away from outside the arc, netting five 3-pointers to carry a slim 34-30 lead into halftime.
Following the break, though, Campbell stayed sharp from the outside with another four 3-pointers, and cut off the effective Derryfield drives to build a 55-41 advantage at the end of the third quarter. And the visitors protected their lead with solid work on their offensive boards to secure a 65-46 victory.
Thomas and Jack each scored 14 to lead Derryfield. Jaxon and Janai added 9 and 7 respectively.
