What a great day to kick off our ski racing season at Crotched Mountain. So grateful to get our team out for in-person winter sports! Under cloudy skies, with mild temperatures, the team took on Trinity, Sunapee, Moultonborough, and Hillsboro-Deering and kicked it in to high gear. The team skied a Giant Slalom race in the morning with 2 runs and a Slalom race in the afternoon with another 2 runs. Our girls started the day with some fabulous clean GS runs, putting Sophomore Hailey Ramundo on the podium in first place, Freshman Lilly Handwerk in 5th, Sophomore Anya Merriman in 10th, Sophomore Alyssa Shula in 11th, Senior Captain Ellie Small in 13th, Sophomore Kate Moeckel in 14th, Freshman Mia Dudley in 15th, Sophomore Abbey Carr in 23rd, Freshman Charlotte Smith in 26th, and Sophomore Ciera Fahey in 28th. That impressive line-up scored 377 team points to win the event! Awesome job girls! We saw some great skiing and what a fabulous way to start the season.
The boys also skied strong. Nice, clean, aggressive runs put Senior Captain Frankie Brandt on the podium with a first place finish, and Sophomore Logan Goldberg joined him with a 3rd place finish. Aiden LaCroix finished in the top 10, in 8th place and Sophomore Jack Schroeder finished the scoring in 12th. Senior Chris VanNatta skied into 14th, Senior Max Smith in 16th, Senior Andrew Wold in 17th, Sophomore Artem Yurovskiy in 23rd, Sophomore Evan Zhang in 25th, Freshman Tad Faulkner in 27th, Freshman Josh Corriveau in 30th, Freshman Freddie Connarn in 32nd, and Sophomores Dylan Fanburg and Ryan Shi completed the line up in 36th and 37th. Scoring 385 team points put them in second place, but just two points behind Sunapee's 387 points. So close, and such great skiing out there today. A strong start!
In the afternoon, we switched gears to SL and again our girls showed what they are made of and rocked another first place team finish with 389 team points! Lilly, Hailey and Anya swept the podium spots in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. That is just awesome-love it! Alyssa finished the scoring for the team with a strong 9th place finish, Freshman Olivia Brar was right behind her in 10th, Mia in 11th, Abbey in 21st and Senior Charlotte Sckaal in 23rd. Five Derryfield girls in the top 10...way to go!!
Not to be outdone, the boys stepped it up and tied rival Sunapee for first place in Slalom. Logan led the pack with a podium finish in 2nd place, with Frankie just .2 seconds (combined) behind him for 3rd. Jack pulled in an impressive 5th place finish and Andrew finished the scoring for the team in 10th. We placed 11 boys in the top 20 today with Chris in 11th, Max in 12th, Artem in 15th, Freshman Zach Rosenthal in 16th, Aiden LaCroix in 17th after a fall in his second run, Tad in 19th, and Freshman Ben Rosenthal in 20th. Freshman Parker Lebiedz skied into 22nd, Freshman Gabe Poritzky in 25th, and after a fall Evan finished our line up in 41st. Both DS and Sunapee finished SL with 386 team points. Some stiff competition, but these DS boys are up to the challenge!
We have already seen some amazing progress since we started training just 2 weeks ago. We can't wait to see what the rest of the season will bring. I think the season will feel fast and furious for the next few weeks, but will wrap up quickly. Let's savor every minute! We are proud of everyone's effort and accomplishments today. Go DS!!
Thanks to Mr. Hettler and Amy Licata for joining us on the hill today as extra coaches. We love having you with us!
