Leading for the Common Good
DI Team Qualifies for States
Derryfield's middle school Destination Imagination team, also known as the Crafty Cougars, headed north to Meredith for a regional qualifying event. It was a wild and exciting day in which the team competed in two challenges, a parade, and a host of fun activities with teams from 21 other area schools.
Team members Henry Howard, Prayag Patel, Neil Valle, Mitchell Grunbeck, and John Small have been preparing for this event all year during the Destination Imagination exploration block, advised by Mr. Brandt. They stepped up their effort and put in extra time this past week refining their solution to the "Picture This" challenge. For this challenge the team wrote and performed a sketch related to a famous painting. They also created a full set for the skit using recycled materials and added special effects to simulate supernatural interference from an unseen ghost. The judges loved the performance, giving the team very high scores for their dialogue, props, creativity, and humor. They enjoyed the improv and the team's ability to stay in character even as the audience was in stitches. The judges gave the team a special commendation for humor, stating, "Your team kept us laughing the whole time!" and for teamwork, "We heard everyone's VOICE in prep. Great Teamwork."
In the afternoon the Crafty Cougars faced the instant challenge. The details of this challenge are top secret, but what we can share is that the team once again showed great collaboration skills. Although time ran out just before the finale, they were able to successfully meet most of the requirements of the challenge.
All of their hard work paid off as the cougars outscored the other middle school team in their challenge and took 1st place to earn a spot at the State Finals on Saturday, March 28 in Nashua. Teams from the state final can qualify to attend Destination Imagination Global Finals to compete with teams from 15 countries and nearly every state.
Coach Brandt reports, "I couldn't be more proud of these guys. They have been loads of fun all year and truly understand the spirit of Destination Imagination."
