The boys headed to Mittersill yesterday to take on the entire division for the State Championships. The girls did the same today at Mount Sunapee. Each school was required to limit their teams to 6 skiers and we competed against Profile, Lin Wood, Sunapee, Hopkinton, Littleton, Gorham, Trinity, Moultonborough, Wilton-Lyndeborough, Hillsboro-Deering and Woodsville. The teams raced 2 runs of Giant Slalom in the morning and 2 runs of Slalom in the afternoon.
The boys had variable conditions all day, sometimes snowing, sometimes so foggy they couldn't see the course. The morning GS saw two awesome runs from Frankie Brandt to place him in 5th, and two fast runs from Henry Howe for 7th place. Logan Goldberg fell on his first GS run taking him out of a scoring position, and Aiden LaCroix and Nathan Dudley stepped up to score for the team in 22nd and 24th respectively. Just behind them was Jack Schroeder pulling into 28th out of a total of 61 competitors. The boys placed 4th as a team in GS with 351 points.
The afternoon slalom got off to a rocky start as the first two boys out of the gate, Henry Howe and Nathan Dudley, both fell on their first runs. That left four boys at the top of the course knowing they each had to put down two clean runs to score for the team, and that is exactly what they did! Frankie Brandt skied next and despite losing a pole, skied fast into 10th place. Logan Goldberg got back on his game to place in 9th. Aiden LaCroix put down two great runs to place in 17th and Emerson Bracy finished off our scoring with two clean runs into 35th. The boys scored 338 slalom points for a 5th place finish.
The boys really showed their determination and teamwork. When faced with some disappointing DNF's, they did not let up but rather put another skier in the gate to step up for the team. The team placed 4th overall, a fabulous accomplishment in a competitive field, and left the day with smiles on their faces and awesome team spirit. They also qualified 3 racers to move on to the Meet of Champions next Thursday at Mittersill. Their top 10 finishes will allow Frankie Brandt, Henry Howe and Logan Goldberg to represent Derryfield against the top skiers of all divisions in the state. Great job boys!
The girls saw blue skies and sunshine at Mount Sunapee and had the only mascot on the mountain. Teammate Alyssa Shula showed her team support by rocking the DS cougar costume while cheering on her teammates at the top of the course for the morning GS. The girls team had a flawless day with no falls and no disqualifications. Hailey Ramundo lead the girls with her 7th place finish, followed by Anya Merriman in 20th, Charlotte Gleichauf in 27th, Ellie Small in 30th, Sophie Brandt in 31st, and Lila Kelsey in 38th. The course required some good strategy with a technical start on a steep section followed by a long flat section before getting back to some pitch. The girls all attacked the course and skied really well placing them in 5th with 328 points.
The afternoon slalom was again led by Hailey Ramundo with her 7th place finish. Anya Merriman placed 19th, with Ellie Small right behind her into 22nd, Charlotte Gleichauf into 33rd, Lila Kelsey in 33rd and Sophie Brandt in 35th. The afternoon slalom saw another Derryfield first when our DS Cougar mascot donned bib #44 and Sophie Brandt took her slalom runs in costume!! It was such a fun day on the mountain with the girls. They skied awesome, had a ton of fun and definitely took the prize for the most team spirit. The girls finished in 5th place in slalom with 338 points and took 5th place overall for the day. Hailey Ramundo qualified with her top 10 finishes to move onto the Meet of Champions. Fabulous job girls!
