SURFACELAPSE: Exploring Surface & Space
The Derryfield School Lyceum Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of SURFACELAPSE, a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by New Hampshire-based artist, Shaina Gates. Gates’ recent works have centered around certain mathematical and physics-based theorems. She explores these ideas through folded and crumpled paper -- the work she makes follows the processes proposed in her studies. By making the folding and crumpling the subject of her drawings and paintings, she aims to bring greater understanding to the manipulated, physical object. Her work explores the interplay of the surface, conceptual ideas and theorems, and our own perception of space.
Shaina Gates lives and works in Exeter, New Hampshire. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design for her BFA in Painting (2005), the School of Visual Arts NY for an MA (2008), and the University of Pennsylvania for her MFA (2016). Her studio practice is mainly based in painting and drawing, along with some experimental writing and 3-dimensional work. In 2019, she launched and solely managed a temporary gallery project, called “The Magenta Suite,” which focused on solo and 2-person shows for emerging artists. Gates was also recently nominated as a finalist for the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Arts Advancement Grant, and will exhibit a body of work related to her proposal at the UNH Art Museum in the spring of 2020.
SURFACELAPSEruns from October 21 through November 22, 2019. The Gallery is open weekdays, 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, November 1, from 6:00 -7:00 P.M.
