VARSITY MOVE TO 2-0 ON SEASON
Two games last week for Derryfield Field Hockey. Wednesday afternoon on the turf saw DS varsity win the first game of the new season by a convincing 6-0 margin over Kingswood HS. Derryfield opened strongly and their early pressure paid off, earning a couple of penalty corners. From one of these, senior co-captain Lindsey Stagg scored the first goal of the season direct from the penalty corner with a beautifully disguised sweep push. DS continued the pressure and new freshman, Kira Geddes scored two goals to give the Cougars a 3-0 half time lead. The first was a close in rebound off the goalkeeper and her second came following a nice passing movement down the right hand side involving Charlotte Rohlfs and Sami King to set up Kira for a shot into the corner. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with DS dictating the game and keeping Kingswood under pressure. Half way through the second half, Lindsey scored again, this time from a penalty stroke to make it 4-0 and then added two more in the closing minutes for a final score of 6-0. Overall a good first game with excellent midfield play from Charlotte Gleichauf and Charlotte Rohlfs to complement Lindsey. The defense was anchored by strong performances from senior co-captains, Bella Matarese and Anna Quinn who successfully contained any Kingswood threat. Outside backs, Julia Tilton, Anna Induni, Tiana Content and Lauren MacLean kept the Kingswood wings in check, while forwards Maddy Brown, Sami King and Hannah Perlberg combined well with Kira to provide a constant, dangerous attacking threat. In goal, Olivia Bollengier had little action until the end of the game, but she stepped up and made two good saves to preserve the shutout.
Friday afternoon saw the visit of Pembroke Academy to the DS turf. The game proved to be one sided with Derryfield dominating in all phases of the game and produce their second win of the season by a score of 11-0. DS scored 8 goals in the first half and followed up with another 3 in the second. A feature of the game was a hat trick by both Lindsey Stagg and Charlotte Rohlfs. Kira Geddes notched 2 goals while Paige Grondin and Charlotte Gleichauf scored their first varsity goals. A tip in at the post by Anna Templeton completed the scoring. It was a strong performance by the whole team. Next up for DSFH is an away game at Goffstown HS on Wednesday at 4 pm.
