McCaigue Retires as Athletic Director

Brian Adie '19
Lenny McCaigue has spent the past 22 years as Derryfield’s Athletic Director, coaching the varsity field hockey team to several state titles and creating bonds with countless members of the Derryfield community. However, all good things must come to an end, and Mr. McCaigue retired from his position as Athletic Director at the end of the school year. He will surely be missed, and it is important to remember everything he did for decades of Derryfield students and athletes.

When asked about what he was proud of during his tenure at Derryfield, Mr. McCaigue said that he found treating all teams and athletes to be the most important component of his job. As Charlotte Evans ‘08 said, “he embraced all levels of athleticism and it created a strong community.” Mr. McCaigue accepted the fact that sports are not always all about winning. “It is about participation and staying healthy,” he noted.

Mr. McCaigue’s presence on campus extended beyond the world of sports. He has built relationships with countless students, parents, and faculty. Amidst his packed schedule, he maintains that the best part of his work day was always going down to the turf with his field hockey players and getting to know them outside of the classroom. Maureen Aydin of the Class of 2002 recalled that when she was in eighth grade, there was no middle school field hockey team. However, “Lenny got everyone to love the sport. It was new, and he expected everyone to try their best.”

Mr. McCaigue explained that “my whole life has involved sports, as an athlete, a coach, and an administrator ... there are so many life skills that come out of playing sports. I hope that I was able to share some of my international coaching experience with other coaches at the school.” He went on to add that “DS as a whole has been inspiring, making it a great place to come to work everyday.”

Over two decades, Mr. McCaigue has built up and strengthened Derryfield’s athletics program, helping numerous teams make the transition to more competitive divisions. Under his leadership, the School has won many titles and the field hockey team is a consistent force to be reckoned with. Beyond the championships and accolades, Mr. McCaigue leaves an admirable legacy of getting students involved in a close-knit, supportive athletics community. For all that and countless other acts, we say thank you.
