DS Edges Hopkinton to Capture an Important 6-5 Win
The Cougars protected a one-run lead in the seventh to pick up a crucial win against a league rival with a similar record. "This is a big win for us today," explained Coach Blaisdell, "Not only because it will help us in the standings but because we played really well down the stretch to hold on to this victory." Hopkinton jumped out early with three runs in the first while DS countered with a single run when 3B Owen Clemans scored on a single by Alex Drake. P Mitch Regan held Hopkinton scoreless in the second and then scored on a single by Owen Clemans to bring the Cougars within a run after two complete. After Hopkinton scored two more in the third and Alex Drake scored on a fielder's choice, the Cougars found themselves down 5-3 after three. Clemans reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and then scored on a majestic double by C Brendan Mulcahy. Mulcahy then scored on a single by Alex Drake to knot the game at 5-5 going into the fifth. Neither team scored in the fifth, and Hopkinton went down 1-2-3 in their half of the sixth. SS led off the home half of the sixth with a walk and stolen base when Mulcahy struck again with another RBI double into the left center gap to give the Cougars a one-run lead. Mulcahy then came in in the seventh to close out the game. He got a weak flyout to second and then a strikeout for the first two outs, but, after a single and an error, Hopkinton had the tying run on third. Mulcahy reared back and struck out the final batter on three straight fastballs aided by a perfect throw down to first after a dropped third strike by catcher Zach Martin. "I am super proud of our team today - especially our captains. Mitch kept his composure when we made some errors behind him early and Brendan delivered from both the plate and the mound," commented Coach Blaisdell.
