NICE WIN IN CLOSE MATCH FOR DS JV TENNIS.

DERRYFIELD 5 – PORTSMOUTH 4
On the first day of the last day of the season, a typically cloudy, chilly and eventually rainy
afternoon, the JVs eked out a 5-4 win against Portsmouth to improve their record to 2-1. It was a
battle between two skeleton squads; Derryfield sent all six of its netmen onto the courts, but
Portsmouth only brought five to oppose the Cougars on their “home” courts at West High School
in Manchester.
Portsmouth started strong, but Derryfield finished stronger to secure the team triumph.
Portsmouth notched quick victories at #1 and #2 singles to take a 2-0 lead. But junior tennis
rookie Kevin Li scored a key 6-2 win of his match at #5 singles, and the Cougars added a point
via forfeit at #6 singles to even the team score at 2-2.
Then following a Portsmouth win at #4 singles, freshman Keegan Butler completed an
impressive come-from-behind performance by winning a tiebreaker at #3 singles to set the team
score at 3-3. Keegan had trailed 1-4 before settling down and rallying with solid ground strokes
to earn a 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Again, undermanned Portsmouth surrendered a point at #3 doubles via forfeit. So when seniors
Ethan Kloc and Noah Gonzalez played a career-best match at #1 doubles to win 6-4, Derryfield
had secured the team victory.
In addition to the key points won by Kevin and Keegan in their singles matches, and Noah and
Ethan in doubles, solid play from senior Rami Hanna and junior rookie Austin Best at #1 and #2
singles respectively enabled the underdog Cougars to defeat favored Portsmouth.
